Atlesbury Regeneration

The Aylesbury Estate which lies to the east of the Walworth Road, and north of Burgess Park, in the London borough of Southwark, is one of the most well-known estates in Europe. The estate encompasses 285,000 square metres and is home to over 7,500 people.

Over the last six years the Aylesbury New Deal for Communities (NDC) has been running a £56 million social programme on the estate. Benefits for residents have included more jobs, greater economic prosperity, improved environmental quality and lower crime levels which have all contributed to a changed perception and a view that at long last the area is moving in the right direction.

On September 27, 2005, due to the poor quality of the buildings on the estate, the Southwark Council’s executive committee made the decision to demolish the estate in stages over the next 15 years and replace it with a new community that will provide better housing, recreational spaces and an improved quality of life for everyone that lives there.
